HARBOUR LIGHTS RESTAURANT was the happy setting on Friday for a local charity fundraiser when she was handed a cheque for almost £16,000.

Dorothy Rodger joined members of the Moray Wheelers cycling club at the Lossiemouth restaurant to receive the results of their latest fundraising escapade for Cancer Research UK.

Led by local man Walter Sutherland, the Wheelers – whose members have an average age that they would only admit to being “over 60” – have between them raised a staggering £54,000 for the charity.

That total was reached by the latest donation, the result of a 320-mile round trip from Moray to Skye over a four day period earlier this summer. The cycle group had to undergo some of the toughest conditions possible with the weather particularly unkind – however, this determined group were not to be denied.

“It is fantastic that Walter and Moray Wheelers keep pulling out all the stops to help Cancer Research UK,” Dorothy said after picking up the latest donation from Walter and his friends.

She added: “We cannot thank them enough – enormous progress is being made in reducing the impact of cancer in Moray and throughout the world. We have only been able to do this because of the dedication and commitment of those such as the members of the Moray Wheelers.”

Cancer Research UK spent over £31 million last year in Scotland on some of the UK’s highest quality scientific and clinical research. Glasgow is home to a thriving community of world-class cancer scientists and doctors, who are working to reduce the devastating impact of this disease, not only locally, but around the world.

An exciting programme of work has been established at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research to seek out potential drug targets and develop cancer drug treatments of the future.
