Three Moray groups net over £287k Climate funding

A TOTAL OF 25 projects in the Highlands and Moray being funded under the Climate Challenge Fund has been welcomed by Green regional MSP John Finnie.

A total of over £2million has been awarded to local groups in the north who promote energy efficiency, grow food locally and tackle fuel poverty.

For 2017 the fund is providing support for projects that deliver the greatest reduction in carbon emissions and support deprived communities. Grants of up to £150,000 are available.

Three Moray-based groups have received funding in this round that included The Buckpool Golf, Sports and Social Club who will receive £148,752 for their efficiency project that will see the installation of energy efficient heating and lighting.

Earthtime for All have been granted £72,270 to assist towards the opening of a new repair and reuse hub in Elgin. The hub will reduce the number of items ending up in landfill and will hold basic sewing, woodwork, repair and maintenance workshops, plus a weekly drop-in session.

Meanwhile REAP is to receive £66,761 to permit them to continue working with the Elgin community food growing spaces. These are aimed at reducing local carbon emissions include grow-your-own workshops, food waste reduction advice and collection by e-bike, plus taste and share locally sourced lunches.

Mr Finnie said: “The Climate Challenge Fund provides support, resources and training to community groups taking action on climate change.

“I am delighted that 25 projects spanning all local authorities in the Highlands and Islands have been awarded funding which will support local communities to recycle, reduce, reuse, promote energy efficiency, grow food locally and tackle fuel poverty.”
