Young people in Speyside are to decide how a £10,000 community fund will be spent in the first ever participatory budgeting initiative in Moray designed specifically for young people.
Speyside YP Decide is a funding opportunity for young people living in Speyside, aged five to 25 years old, to apply for between £100 and £1000 for a community project or idea.
All applicants are invited to submit a proposal by the deadline of 14 September, they will then get the opportunity to invite friends and family along to a voting event where young people living in the area will vote on their favourite projects to decide who will receive funding.
Debi Weir, Senior Youth Worker at Moray Council and Speyside YP Decide project lead said “I am just delighted that the young people in Speyside now have the opportunity to learn more about participatory budgeting by taking part in a development process that will arm them with the skills and knowledge to take part in projects going forward.
“It’s really exciting that we can give our young people a voice and let them make decisions about their community whilst also gaining funding for projects that they choose to support or create. It shows that we value their contribution as part of our wider community and they will become the community activists of our future. As Speyside YP Decide is a pilot, keep your eyes peeled to see what’s still to come for our young people in Moray!”
Applications for projects are invited from young people by 14 September that meet one or more of the following criteria: Advancing Education; Arts or Amateur Sport; Citizenship or Community Support; Promoting Health and/or Relieving Poverty.
Applications that meet the criteria will be invited to a development workshop on 21 September where they can work on their application, the final deadline will then be 28 September for amended applications.
Voting will take place on 5 October.
