Secondary schools period plan goes to consultation

WIDE RANGING PLANS to reform teaching arrangements at all eight of Moray’s secondary schools are being put to the public for consideration.

A survey was launched by Moray Council yesterday on their plans to introduce a 33-period week in secondary schools.

Under the new arrangements, which are being proposed from the 2018/19 session, it is hope to increase opportunities and experiences for learners while raising attainment and achievement.

Many local authorities in Scotland already operate 32 or 33-period weeks at a time when Moray has continued with a 30-period timetable. Parents, staff and trade unions will now be consulted – but anyone with an interest is invited to respond to the survey which can be found online and will remain open until close of play on Friday, May 19.

A Moray Council spokesman said: “The reasons for proposing the changes are that they will help us in our ambition to strive for excellence and equity by raising attainment and closing the attainment gap.

“Changing the school week will give us greater flexibility to develop and enhance the curriculum for all learners.

“It will give us an increased variety of opportunities for learning and teaching, more flexibility to work with a range of partners and give pupils more options for wider achievement.”
