A TRADITIONAL STEADINGS close to Inverharroch Castle to the south of Dufftown is to be transformed into a distillery that celebrates the rich history of the area.

The Cabrach Trust is aiming to invest over five million pounds on a whisky visitor attraction – and now they are asking those who have worked in the area to help them.

They want people to share their memories and stories – and for that reason a ‘memory day’ is being organised this weekend when they can relive life in the Cabrach. They are also being asked to bring along photographs they might have that provide an insight into the history of the region.

Through the 18th and 19th centuries it is known that the area had local people mixing farming with production of illegal whisky through a network of illicit stills – part of the heritage that became the most famous whisky producing area in the world.

Executive Director of the Trust, Sue Savege, said: “We already know the Cabrach has a long and unique history and we commissioned researchers to explore this earlier this year.

“They found the remains of an illicit whisky bothy on a hillside, which was a hugely significant find. The heritage centre is at the heart of our plans – but people’s stories, memories and anecdotes will bring it to life.”

Plans formed by the Trust includes a play area, café and exhibition space while the former primary school buildings on the site will become holiday accommodation and a storage area for up to 100,000 bottles of whisky.

The open day will be held at the Acorn Centre on Sunday, June 11 from Noon until 4pm.
