Owners of interesting buildings urged to open their doors

Elgin’s cells were opened up on Doors Open Day in 2016.

OWNERS OR CUSTODIANS of Moray’s buildings of particular historical, social or cultural interest are being invited to consider taking part in the annual ‘Doors Open Day’ this year.

From the newest construction to the oldest surviving building, Doors Open Day is about celebrating the built environment by allowing the public to see buildings which are not normally open to them.

Of interest also will be those buildings that are open to the public – but contain rooms or areas of significance that would not normally be accessible.

Coordinator in Moray for Doors Open Day is Alan MacBeth who said: “We have some fantastic buildings in Moray new and old many which have been lovingly restored and this is an opportunity to share that love of your building with an appreciative public.

“Organisations which get involved will receive advice and support from the Co-ordinator and from the Scottish Civic Trust.

“Doors Open Day can be a good way for owners to ‘reach out’ to the local community, publicise a project, or even increase membership of their organisation. Entry must be free but there is also the opportunity to accept donations.”

Last year a number of building across Moray joined in the spirit of the day – including Covesea Lighthouse in Lossiemouth and three of Buckie’s churches.

The Findhorn Heritage Centre was opened up with St Ninian’s church Tynet, Preshom church, Inverene House in Forres and the Holy Trinity Episcopalian building in Keith.

Of particular interest in Elgin was a rare glimpse behind the scenes at the Sheriff Court along with Greyfriar’s Chapel and the Elgin Fire Station.

Anyone interested in their building be included this year for Doors Open Day on September 23 should leave your contact details with the Area Co-ordinator by Email to admin.devservs@moray.gov.uk or phone 01343 563088 by not later than April 28.

If you cannot manage this year but would like to be involved in the future please use the contact details above to register your interest.
