New learning programme seeks to unveil the world of Social Enterprises

A MORAY SOCIAL ENTERPRISE is helping people understand more about the work they do through a practical learning programme in conjunction with the Social Enterprise Academy.

ReBOOT in Forres has a solid reputation in Moray for supporting individuals, companies and community groups through its IT Recycling and training efforts.

Now it is providing a new learning programme that is aimed at developing teamwork and communication skills – while focusing on the benefits of Social Enterprise in Moray’s communities.

ReBOOT manager Lee McGrath, who is one of two tutors taking part in the scheme, explained: “It is a fun, interactive and practical teaching and those taking part in the courses have an opportunity to visit and work at local Social Enterprises alongside some great peer-led learning with two tutors.”

David Bryan is the Hub Manager for the Social Enterprise Academy in the Highlands and Islands. He said: “Wide Horizons is about enabling people not in work to access employment opportunities in social enterprise.

“Moray has over 120 social enterprises, and many offer supported employment and training opportunities. Social Enterprises trade like a business but do so for social or community purpose.

“So, whilst the whole team need to pull together to make sales and/or deliver a service, there is scope to support new team members too.

“Wide Horizons develops skills in team working and self-leadership and an awareness of the social enterprises themselves. We spend time in the workplaces, rolling up our sleeves and experiences being ‘part of the team’.

“We also discover more about ourselves, our own skills and abilities, and thinking about how we can continue to grow as individuals.

“It’s great fun and also a bit challenging. The programme is fully funded, and open to anyone not in work. Participants in the last programme described it as ‘life changing’ and even ‘life saving’, in terms of being able to see a brighter future for themselves.”
