National charity ready to provide company for Moray’s older residents

A NATIONAL CHARITY that offers friendship and support to older people is setting up two centres in Moray – and are urging local people to volunteer their services.

Contact the Elderly have operated hundreds of groups that meet monthly around the UK, but until now have never established any in Moray.

That is set to change on February 11, when two groups – one in Elgin and another in Forres – will be established. Support officer for the new groups is Lorna Dunbar, who said: “We have lots of volunteers throughout the north east who do invaluable work with older people.

“We would now like to expand their numbers in Moray, either for people to host parties or drivers who are able to help with other activities.

“Nearly every single one of our guests has told us they are so pleased they got involved with Contact the Elderly, it is amazing to hear the impact enjoying an afternoon with volunteers and other older people has on the overall happiness and wellbeing of our guests.”

Contact the Elderly has 11 well-established groups in Aberdeen meeting on a Sunday afternoon once a month, with older people taking part being collected from their homes by the same volunteer driver.

It has proven to be a highly successful system of support in Aberdeen and Inverness – now the charity, which has now been operating for over 50 years, is seeking to close the gap in Moray.
