Moray youth parliamentarian to guide the way on independence debate

An 18-year-old from Keith will chair a meeting this evening where young women from throughout Scotland will grill senior politicians on Scottish independence – from a female viewpoint.

Vice-Chair of the Scottish Youth Parliament, Louise Cameron, will chair the meeting that will allow the audience to quiz Young People’s minister Aileen Campbell, who will be speaking in favour of a Yes vote in September’s referendum.

Labour MSP Kezia Dugdale – who was brought up in Elgin – will be representing the Better Together campaign, while also taking part in the debate is Juliet Swann from the Electoral Reform Society.

Miss Cameron, who is the Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament for Moray, will chair the debate in Edinburgh which has been jointly organised by the Parliament and Girl Guides Scotland.

She said: “Young people from across Scotland have been telling us that they want clear answers to their questions about the referendum.

“They want to be able to engage with and shape of the debate. It is so important that we grasp every opportunity to encourage young women to have their say.

“It is important that as young women we go out and make our mark on ballot papers.”

The chief commissioner of Girl Guides in Scotland, Sue Walker, said her organisation believed is was “important” to encourage their members to vote in the referendum.

She added: “We are keen to promote active citizenship with our members actively seeking to inform themselves about the issues and then exercise their vote.”

Young people in Moray gave an emphatic thumbs-down to independence when all secondary schools in the region took part in a ‘mock referendum’ earlier this month.
