Here we have views of Ian Taylor, Independent candidate for Fochabers/Lhanbryde.
I AM IAN TAYLOR standing for Ward 4 – Fochabers Lhanbryde. Born in Elgin, after leaving Elgin Academy I joined the merchant navy for five years, some of which I spent at Leith Nautical College Edinburgh.
I then returned to Elgin and set up my own business selling fruit and vegetables for more than 35 years.
By standing as an Independent, I can assure the constituents of Ward 4 that I am truly independent and have no affiliation with any political parties. We have all been aware of past candidates who have stood, as “Independent” but were known to have strong leanings to one or other of the parties sitting in the Council.
I can assure you that, in my case, “Independent” means Independent – and that when I vote in Council is will be for a decision that will be beneficial to the people of Moray and not follow the party lines.
In my business, I have always worked on the principle of employing the best person for the job regardless of sex, beliefs or nationality. I am, therefore, happy to see that Moray welcomes all who are willing to contribute to the community and prosperity of the area.
We are all aware that the Moray Council are working under severe financial constraints that must be addressed. I feel, however, that the majority of current proposals for cost savings are following methods used in the past and I think a fresh approach is required.
I am certain savings could be made in areas that have previously been avoided. It has been policy in the past not to reduce staff numbers, although most businesses have been forced to reduce their workforce.
I am, obviously, at present, not aware of staff numbers and distribution, but there must be some leeway and possible scope for amalgamation of sections in the council and better use of staff.
By listening to people in Moray, I know and understand what they need and want. All the communities within Ward 4 have their own priorities and issues. I would try my hardest to make sure that their voices are heard for the good of Moray as a whole.
